Brainstorming:
I was dreading the self-portrait.
1: I am not very good with figure drawings and
2: I would prefer not to draw myself.
This was my second time doing a self-portrait as I did one last year in drawing.
I knew that I wanted to go a completely different route from my previous portrait. I wanted to use whimsical colors and make myself look somewhat less realistic.
The only way I brainstormed was by taking pictures of myself.
I decided to go with the picture of me laying on my pillow with my braids in different positions.
Artistic Process:
Right off the bat I knew that I wanted to use prismacolors. I am most comfortable with this medium so I figured it would make the portrait drawing process a bit easier.
Another reason I chose to use prismas was because it gave me flexibility when experimenting with different colors.
I would say that this project took quite a while and didn't turn out as well as I had wanted (what's new?)
Challenges/Successes:
Because I am not very skilled in the portrait drawing department I had some struggles with getting the face shape correct along with my shoulders.
I also had a difficult time adding value/highlights/shadows to the face... I had a tough time making the face look smooth and not choppy.
In the end I believe it came out okay and was overall better than expected.
Do I think I could improve? YES
But I also believe it was an improvement from my last self portrait.
Overall I would say I'm content with the finished product.

Sorry for the poor quality photos... These were taken at work where the lighting is not good.
