This project didn't require much thought, simply because I had a rough idea of what I wanted to do. The hardest part was figuring out which one of my dogs I wanted to draw... I knew that I wanted to do this project in acrylic paint because I hadn't made a project in this medium this year.
In order to choose the picture I wanted to create, I decided to create a folder of all the pictures of my dogs.
I knew I wanted to use a close-up picture so I could include the details in the fur.
I finally decided on a picture of my dog Toby.
I decided to chose Toby because he didn't have too much fur but I also liked the composition of the photo I had taken.
Challenges:
I didn't face many challenges other than the fact that I didn't have too much experience with acrylic paint. Although I had done a few projects in the past with this medium, I still felt that my skills were lacking when it came to using it.
The challenge I found was being able to blend the paint colors quickly enough before they dried. I also had a difficult time getting the eyes to look correct, without them looking creepy. Other than that I didn't struggle too much.
Successes:
I believe that this piece is successful in the fact that it looks like my dog. I like how is fur came out and I think the nose is the best part of the painting. I also like the pop of green in his sweater (I think it makes it look better).
Things I would change:
I need advice for the background color. I'm not completely satisfied with the light red that I have right now. I also wasn't sure if I should do a solid color or go for more a background/pattern. The reason I decided not to go that route is because I was afraid it would be too busy.
Learning experience:
I wouldn't say I necessarily learned anything from this project, but it was definitely good practice. Although i'm not too fond of acrylic I learned that I am not too bad with using it. I just need to work on painting faster so I can blend the colors better.
After doing this project I think I have shown a bit of growth. The last time I did an acrylic painting was sophomore year, and this project was certainly a step up from the previous.
